Streetlight Manifesto Live In Philly (5/19/17)

As a ska-punk fan growing up in New Jersey during the early 2000s, Streetlight Manifesto was always one of my favorite bands back in the day, and if you’re familar with the genre you damn well know who Streetlight Manifesto is by now.  I honestly think that Tomas Kalnoky is one of the most talented songwriters who pushed the boundaries in a genre that was suffering from stagnation.

Touring to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of their sophomore album Somewhere In The Between, Philly was actually the first stop on the tour and I wasn’t exactly sure if they were going to play it in it’s entirety or just a few songs off the album.  Personally, I loved Somewhere In The Between, with its incredibly existentialistic themes backdropped by incredibly catchy melodies, so I went to Philly’s Electric Factory sort of on a whim to catch them on Friday. Luckily for me the show was not sold out (because fuck paying nearly 15 dollars in Ticketmaster fees) and room was pretty packed out as it usually is whenever they come to town (unfortunately I missed only opener The Mephiskapheles who I would have actually liked to see).

Streetlight Manifesto took the stage playing an intro of “The Ants Go Marching In” before kicking into “Watch It Fall”.  As expected, the majority of the set consisted of songs from Somewhere In The Between as people danced and sang along throughout the set.  As typical during a Streetlight set, Tomas and company kept the stage banter to a minimum as they played a tight and fun show.  After announcing “this is the song you all came here for” and closing with “The Blonde Lead The Blind” Streetlight Manifesto left the stage for a bit to return with an encore of a few songs off of both The Hands That Thieve and debut Everything Goes Numb.

As Streetlight left the stage once again, chants of “ole” rang through the crowd (this is how you know New Jersey is in the building… Bouncing Souls chants at every show) they returned once more to finish the night off with title track “Somewhere In The Between”.  A fun set, this was one of the best I’ve seen them play in a few years, as they seemed to have a renewed energy on stage.  (I’m going to go on a whim and assume it’s the recent conclusion of the settlement between Victory Records and them, a court case that’s been happening for years now.)
